How to start a Blog

In a world where social media is leading business initiatives, it is important to keep a blog. A blog can serve as a home-place for your clients to learn about your company and your services while instilling a bit of your company’s values and personality. Furthermore, it provides an opportunity for your clients to get updates and inside information that will ultimately boost business and build stronger relationships.

Here are some tips to help you start a successful blog:

  1. Decide on a Purpose

Before starting a blog, you should decide on a clear purpose for it. Will your blog focus only on company news or will include other information? Will it strive to be friendly and entertaining, or clear and informative? Is your goal to make money, friends, or market your business? If you answer these questions before starting, your blog will be more effective in reaching its goal and target audience.

In addition to deciding a purpose, company blogs normally stick to a theme. This answers the question ‘What will I write about?’ As you want your audience to be hooked on your blog, it is important that you provide content that solves problems or provides useful tips to your audience. In addition, it is advisable to blog about something you know and are excited about. This way your readers are not only gaining valuable information, but also getting excited about your business.

  1. Create Content

This is perhaps the ‘hardest’ part. Once your theme is picked, make a list of topics you would like to address. You can also look for topics in newspapers, magazines, and even other blogs! Try to be creative when choosing topics, and remember that you want something that will be appealing and useful to your audience. Talk about what is going on in your industry and include links to other posts you have found interesting, events that are coming up, or newly released research that speaks to your audience. Be aware (and make your readers aware) of any new trends that may be affecting your industry.

One of the most important ways to grow your audience and keep them is to write on a regular basis. The best way to do this is to set time aside for it and exercise some discipline. Otherwise, things will keep piling up and you will lose readers because you failed to provide new content for them to be exited about. Setting a schedule is the best way to grow readership and keep interested people coming back. Also, the more you write, the more your blog will be picked up by search engines and the more visibility you will have in your area of expertise.

  1. Publicize your Blog

Start by inviting current clients and friends and encouraging them to spread the word. However, you should also be proactive about getting your blog read. This includes reading other blogs and commenting. Social media is about interaction, and the more you interact, the more people will be interested in what you have to say. Once you find your place and voice on the Internet, writing your blog will be a source of pleasure and growth.

Finally, enjoy! A blog should be a place where your passions and interests are communicated, not a stressful extra that you are doing on the side. Don’t try too hard to impress your audience, or promote yourself blatantly as these are huge turn-offs in the blogging community. Be yourself and have fun! If you are genuine in your blog and you like what you do, chances are you will attract a positive readership.
