At Alternative Strategies, when we think of December, we think about the festivities that happen all around town.  This month, we’ve decided to search for the best holiday events that are happening all around town. We all know sunny San Diego isn’t exactly a Winter Wonderland, but what’s great about holiday events here is that we make it big and we make it happen. So, join your neighbors for a special night out on the town with your friends and family!

The Del Mar Holiday Wonderland takes place in Del Mar Plaza which starts from 15th Street and ends at 9th Street. There’s lots of entertainment, such as, horse and carriage rides, children’s crafts, restaurant tastes and more. Event tickets used for rides, games, crafts and restaurant tastes are available at www.delmarmainstreet.com. A portion of the event’s proceeds benefit local schools. This event will take place on December 1st, Sunday at 1 pm.

When it comes to outdoor events, we have the biggest, craziest annual holiday event in Balboa Park: December Nights. It’s the official kick off to the holiday season, so expect it to be massive. Last year, about 400,000 people attended and this year they’re expecting just as many, if not more. The coolest part? It’s a FREE festival featuring food, shopping, entertainment and activities. Also, free admission to most museums during the event. What’s the downside? PARKING! Tip: Don’t park anywhere near Balboa Park. For $3, you can park at Tailgate Park and take a shuttle. This event is taking place December 4th from 5-10 pm and December 5th at Noon.

You deserve a nice holiday party, but so does your dog! For the first three Saturday’s in December, Hotel Solamar will be hosting Santa Paws, a Holiday Party for your dog(s) from 2-4 pm. Bring your dog and a camera to snap a picture with Santa and let your dogs mingle with other dogs while enjoying treats.

Deck the Halls this December at Anthology. Join the Anthology House Band December 22nd, 7-9 pm for an evening of Holiday Music for you and your family. Just a $5 cover and kids menu available. Then, join them again December 31st, for their New Year’s Motown Eve event. Inclusive show tickets with Prix Fixe dinner package, champagne toast, party favors and live performance by Motown Revue. At Pacifica Del Mar, Chef Christopher Idso has created special holiday menus for a memorable dining experience at the beach. They’re offering a 3-course Christmas Prix Fixe menu for $49 and a $15 Prix Fixe menu for Children 12 and under. Holiday Hours are 1-9 pm. Call and reserve early, 858-792-0476.

Other events:

• Holiday Festival at Hotel Del Coronado. Ice Skating by the sea and appearance by Santa Claus. December 2nd, 4-7pm.
• 10th Annual Little Italy Tree Lighting and Christmas Village. December 5th, 4:30 pm.
• La Jolla Christmas Parade and Holiday Festival. The parade will begin at Girard Avenue in downtown La Jolla at 2 pm on December 6th and finish at Prospect.
• Hanukkah Happening at Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center. Festivities include games, food, crafts, auction and more. Admission is $2 and parking is free.
